It should be noted that, although these categories of comparison come from a systems model, there is no logical commitment to systemic analysis implied by their use in this way. All that is required is the acceptance that the delineated functions do in fact describe performances that most political organizations carry out. Indeed, it is another facet of metatheoretical formulations that they do not have to be accepted in toto. Insight does not require logical coherence to be useful, and we may accept some aspects of an analogy as being illuminating without being committed to others.

It is equally important to realize that a contention that a particular metatheoretical perspective is able to provide political insight does not imply that it will be equally illuminating in all political contexts. The argument that an organic system analogy may be useful in looking at societies and polities, which have a relatively coherent structure provided by normative patterning, does not mean that international politics, which for the most part lacks such patterning, can be usefully examined in terms of this conceptualization.26 Nor does it mean that phenomena unamenable to insight from a particular metatheory will not be illuminated by others, as seemingly international politics is illuminated by the theory of games.27
